Australian Gambling – Martin Jacobson, aged just 28, has cashed over $5.5 million in winnings across his career, but had never won a major live poker tournament.
But that all changed yesterday when he outwitted and outsmarted eight of the best poker players in the world to be crowned the World Series of Poker Main Event Final Table champion.
The Swede’s victory not only tripled his career winnings, with the monstrous $10 million dollar purse, but also gave him the symbolic – $500,000 – WSOP gold bracelet, a symbol of his win in poker’s greatest event.
It was all in the 10s for this tournament.
It’s the 10th time the Rio has hosted the event, the prize was $10 million, Jacobson drew pocket 10s on the final hand and the flop produced – you guessed it – a 10, giving him the triple he needed to win the championship.
Heading into the final table with the second shortest stack of any of the November 9, Jacobson was cool, calm and collected on the felt across the two days, whittling away at his foes, one by one, before he was eventually crowned champion.
As millions tuned in around the world, Jacobson methodically worked his short stack on day one, watching six competitors get eliminated and pushing himself into second place at the end of the 12.5 hour, 245 hand first day.
On the second day it took a bit over over two hours for the Netherlands’ Jorryt Van Hoof to bust out and then just an hour for Jacobson to knock over Norwegian Felix Stephensen and claim the title.
